The event drew over 500 attendees and was a collaborative effort involving key institutions such as the Departments of Correctional Services and Social Development, the Emfuleni Local Municipality, the South African Police Service and Unisa, particularly its Vaal Regional Service Centre (RSC) (Gauteng Region), among others.

The walk began at the Sebokeng Zone 12 stop sign at 08:30, with participants from all corners of the community, including local organisations, students and concerned citizens. Banners and placards with powerful anti-GBVF messages were displayed, while the group sang songs of unity, clad in bright orange GBVF T-shirts.

After the walk, participants gathered at Trinity Assemblies of God Church for a programme featuring speakers from various sectors. The talks focused on different aspects of GBVF, providing insights, encouraging engagement and sharing resources to help the community combat GBVF. Brochures with local support services information were also made available.

The event fostered an open environment for participants to share their experiences and engage in discussions. Arthur Xorile and Maserame Dipale from the Vaal RSC highlighted the significance for Unisa’s Gauteng Region, stating: "This walk showcases our commitment to standing with the community and addressing the critical issue of GBVF."

The GBVF awareness walk was a vital step toward raising awareness and uniting the community in the fight against gender-based violence, demonstrating the importance of education, support and ongoing action in eradicating GBVF.
