Prof Alex B. Makulilo

Alex B. Makulilo is Professor of law, technology and innovation at the Open University of Tanzania. He served as Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic, Research and Consultancy at the Open University of Tanzania. Makulilo holds a Doctor of Law (summa cum laude) from University of Bremen, an LL.M in Information and Communications Technology Law from University of Oslo, and an LL. B from University of Dar es Salaam. In 2014 - 2016, he was Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow at the University of Bremen.

Makulilo’s research has special focus on the interrelationship between law and technology. He has published widely on these aspects of law in the highly ranked international peer review journals. Makulilo is editor of the “African Data Privacy Laws” (Springer 2016), a pioneering book in the field of data privacy in Africa. He is working on two titles commissioned by the Oxford University Press and Routledge. With a repertoire of about 50 publications, mostly international, Makulilo’s scholarly footprints are undeniable.  

Makulilo has consulted broadly on technology regulation, data privacy law and policy issues. He has similarly given several invited/plenary talks at international conferences. Makulilo is an advocate of the High Court of Tanzania.
