It has now been three weeks since the start of the official examination period. We hope your preparations are progressing well, and for those who have completed their October/November 2024 exams, we wish you successful outcomes. We would like to address some concerning issues we have observed.
Examination rules were included in the admission letters and announced on module sites. These rules guide submission rules (document format, submission timeframes, etc), proctoring rules, awareness of academic integrity and contact centre information. Non-adherence to these rules has negative consequences that often result in the student’s submission not being marked or their marks being withheld. We emphasise the importance of adhering to the examination rules to guide your online assessment experience and ensure your efforts are rewarded. Our detective measures have indicated increased unethical use of AI tools in responding to examination question papers. Although AI tools serve as powerful learning aids, misusing it - such as submitting AI-generated content without proper acknowledgment or permission -amounts to plagiarism and diminishes the value of your work. We urge you to use these technologies responsibly and ethically, ensuring that your work reflects your understanding and effort. Submissions identified as AI-generated will result in students being awarded a 0% and in more serious cases, being subjected to disciplinary proceedings. Students are reminded that Unisa maintains a zero tolerance for any form of academic misconduct.
We have also noticed an increase in the use of offensive language and aggressive behaviour from students expressing frustration over the consequences of failing to follow examination rules. It is important that we foster a respectful and constructive dialogue within our academic environment. In addition, effective communication is a key skill for professional success, one that all students should strive to master. Students are reminded that the use of offensive or aggressive language is unacceptable and will result in disciplinary action in accordance with the Student Disciplinary Code.
In light of these concerns, we urge all students to reflect on their actions and maintain a high standard of professional conduct. While we are dedicated to supporting and guiding you throughout your studies, we all must uphold the values of integrity and respect that define to our institution.
