Unisans bid farewell to a historic but outdated Building 30 on Sunday, May 5th, 2024, with a controlled implosion. The demolition marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Sunnyside Campus, making space for the construction of the Sunnyside Multipurpose Centre that will serve Unisa staff, students and the surrounding communities.
While Building 30 held some of Unisa’s rich history, it was dilapidated and unfit for renovation. The implosion, a safe and efficient demolition method, ensured a smooth transition to the new centre. Among other functionalities, the exciting development will offer a vibrant space for various activities and events, fostering a stronger connection between the university and the neighbourhood.
The implosion of Building 30 marked a turning point for the university, solidifying its commitment to world-class facilities. By clearing the way for the Sunnyside Multipurpose Centre, the university is demonstrating a focus on modern infrastructure that enhances the learning experience and serves the community. This new facility signifies a move away from outdated structures and towards a futuristic campus that fosters innovation and collaboration.
