Unisa NSRC explores potential collaboration and funding opportunities in Moscow

Unisa’s National Student Representative Council (NSRC) embarked on a transformative journey to Moscow, Russia. From 12 to 16 June 2024, the President of the NSRC, Nkosinathi Mabilane and Secretary General, Aphiwe Dlamini, alongside Dr Levy Motebejane of Unisa Protection Services and the Africa Tourism Board (ATB), ventured to the Russian capital with a clear mission to explore, learn, strengthen partnerships, and connect on a global scale.

This trip symbolised Unisa’s commitment to fostering and strengthening partnerships that benefit its student body. The NSRC aimed to uncover potential collaboration and funding opportunities while engaging with universities, diplomatic representatives, and youth groups during their stay.

The trip was marked by several significant achievements that promise to elevate both NSRC and Unisa. Through the advocacy of Motebejane, Mabilane and Dlamini were appointed Youth Ambassadors of the Africa Tourism Board (ATB). This prestigious role recognises their leadership within Unisa and positions them to collaborate with international youth groups and stakeholders across various sectors, including tourism.

The delegates met with RUDN University, highlighting that: “Meetings with the Executive Dean of RUDN University provided a platform for fruitful discussions and potential collaborations in education and skills exchange between Unisa and one of Russia’s leading educational institutions.”. These connections are aimed to enrich the academic and cultural exchange experiences for students from both universities. The trip empowered NSRC leaders with firsthand experience in global decision-making and executive leadership dynamics. They gained valuable insights into managing large-scale projects and entrepreneurial initiatives, which are essential for their future roles within Unisa and beyond. They have gained critical knowledge that will inform future strategic initiatives and engagements. Active participation in global youth discussions and initiatives headed by the Africa Tourism Board has elevated Unisa’s reputation and positioned the university as a key player in shaping international discourse on youth empowerment and education.

Reflecting on their journey, the NSRC underscores the trip’s role in their personal and professional growth. The trip to Moscow has deepened their understanding of global diplomacy and positioned them as catalysts for change within the international education landscape. As the NSRC returned home, their exploration of opportunities in Moscow set a precedent for future international engagements, showcasing Unisa’s dedication to fostering global citizenship and enhancing educational excellence.
