Election process flow

Call for registration/application/nominations

In line with clause 2.7 of the UNISA Electoral Policy for a Student Representative Council, the IEC hereby makes a call to all student organizations/structures within UNISA to apply/register to participate in the 2018 UNISA SRC Election.

The process and requirements:

Student organisations willing to participate in the election must register with the IEC and provide the following:

  • the constitution of the student organisation
  • the list of its executive committee members with contact details
  • a handwritten list of 100 (minimum) registered students with their student numbers and signatures appended supporting the student organisation.
  • A signed declaration of good conduct [Unisa Electoral Code of Conduct]

Eligibility of students appearing on the handwritten list in terms of clause 2.3 of the SRC Constitution and clause 2.7.3 of the EP

  • Students who are eligible to vote are also eligible to nominate.
  • Only students registered for a formal qualification can nominate/vote.
  • Formal qualifications include:

          -  A higher certificate

          - Diploma

          - Degree

          - Postgraduate studies eg – Advanced Diploma, Honours, Masters, Doctorate    

  • Students registered for informal qualifications are not eligible to nominate or vote
  • Informal qualifications include:

          -  Short Learning Programmes

          - Certificate Programmes

          - NDP

Opening and closing date

Applications/registrations/nominations by organisations/structures willing to participate in the 2018 Unisa SRC Elections open on 1 May 2018 and closes on 31May 2018.

Submissions

The registration forms, signed Electoral Code of Conduct, handwritten and signed list as well as Constitution and list of Executive Committee Members of organisations/structures, should be emailed to the Chairperson of the IEC and srcelections email address by 16:00 on 31 May 2018.

Please note: The IEC will only register organisations/structures who complied with the above-mentioned requirements. Should an organisation/structure manage to secure the required information on time, they are allowed to submit immediately to the IEC instead of waiting for the last day. This will give the IEC ample time to do the verification as and when the registrations are received.

Hard copies must be submitted to SRC Elections Administrators in the regions.

Note: It is a requirement that the process is done both manually and electronically.

Verification

Verification will be done by the IEC with the assistance of the Election Management Company, which will be appointed to form the administrative arm of the IEC.

Grace period/rectification

The IEC will grant a five day (11-15 June 2018) period to the organisations/structures who failed to meet the requirements after verification to rectify any outstanding issue(s).

Announcement of the outcome of the registration process

The IEC notifies and announces the organisations/structures successfully registered. (20 June 2018)

Manifesto launch (es) and voter education

The IEC invites you to participate in the upcoming manifesto presentations, political debates and voter education fiesta at the following regional centres from 21 July to 2 August 2018: Cape Town, East London, Durban, Nelspruit, Tshwane, Johannesburg, Rustenburg and Polokwane.

Voting

Voting will take place from 13 to 24 August 2018.

Announcement of results

The results of the elections, for both regional and national, will be announced after five days.

Inauguration of Regional SRC’s

Inauguration of RSRC’s will take place in September 2018. The exact dates to be confirmed and announcement made after the results are announced.

Inauguration of NSRC

Inauguration of the NSRC will take place in September 2018. The exact date to be confirmed and announcement made after the results are announced.
