Unisa first-year journey e-mails: number 2
Computers and the internet are essential tools in the workplace, in life and in education. At Unisa, you will be connecting to the university from a distance, so online tools will play a huge role in your study experience.
Our focus this week is on connecting with Unisa online, creating your community of learning and how we can support you.
Activity 1: Connect via myUnisa and your myLife e-mail account
- If you have not already done so, it is time to register on myUnisa, Unisa's online student portal. Think of myUnisa as your lifeline - your primary link to your university. It is how you will communicate with Unisa and how Unisa will communicate with you.
- All registered students get a free myLife e-mail account for life. Important information, notices and updates are sent exclusively to this account, so it is very important that you check it regularly. To access your e-mails, go to myUnisa and click on the orange myLife e-mail button for the login page for myLife (or click on http://mylife.unisa.ac.za/). Take note that Unisa will not use any other private e-mail address (like Gmail, yahoo or webmail) to communicate with you - we will only use your myLife e-mail address. Activity 2: Connect via Unisa's social media platforms
These are great channels through which to share ideas, find other students, ask questions and generally stay informed.
- Visit Facebook and search for "University of South Africa". "Like" the Unisa fan page.
- Follow Unisa on Twitter: https://twitter.com/unisa
- If you have a LinkedIn profile, search for the Unisa page. You can also request to join the Unisa Career Connections group.
- Subscribe to the Unisa channel on YouTube: www.youtube.com/UnisaVideos
- Listen to Unisa Radio. Unisa Radio keeps you updated and informed on a whole range of Unisa-related topics. Their programming consists of music, informative interviews and talk shows.
Activity 3: Connect to a Unisa regional centre
- Visit one of Unisa's regional offices to get advice, meet other students, make use of Unisa services, have conversations with counsellors and academic literacies facilitators, use a computer (there are a limited number of computers available at the regional centres), learn more about the Unisa Library, and attend learning skills workshops and tutorials.
- If you don't have a Unisa regional centre close to you, think about who you can connect with in your own environment. Find a mentor - someone in your community who has studied, preferably through distance learning, who can give you advice and encouragement, and guide you when things get tough.
Special activity
You are invited to the live broadcast to be hosted by the Student Retention Unit between 12:00 and 13:00 on Wednesday, 27 February 2019. The broadcast will focus on Library services.
