Purpose statement:
The purpose of the Short Learning Programme is to provide an advanced introductory study in the subject of Music Rights Law, to enable participates to acquire essential skills in the subject-matter which can be used immediately. The course will introduce learners to the most pertinent legal issues arising from the legal relationships that exist in the music industry, including issues relating to copyright and related rights; issues relating to contract; issues relating to merchandise rights, celebrity endorsement deals, unlawful competition issues, privacy rights, image rights etc.
A second purpose of this course is to bridge the serious knowledge gap that exists in South Africa in this area of law as a result of the non-existence of a course of this nature at South African institutions of higher learning. It is envisaged that the offering of this course will provide the necessary basic material to encourage the development of similar programmes at institutions of higher learning.
