Hard work earns Chawane a Bachelor of Education degree (Cum Laude)

Zamekile Mukelisiwe Chawane of Mkhuhlu township, Mpumalanga, adopted the principles of working hard and staying focused during her studies. As a result, she earned herself a Bachelor of Education degree (Cum Laude), awarded at the Unisa Autumn 2024 Graduations held in Mbombela.

Chawane says the journey was not smooth sailing: "It was not easy to study online. You are on your own and must familiarise yourself with the online earning system." She adds: "I also experienced loadshedding and network connectivity during research, as well as the submission of assignments and exams. Moreover, I had to balance my responsibilities as a wife, mother and student." In this regard, she prioritised and got better at planning skills.

Explaining the significance of pursuing her academic goals, Chawane says: "I have always dreamed of going to university to study for a Bachelor of Education degree, as teaching is a profession I like and have a passion for." She adds that she looks forward to further developing herself academically and passing her knowledge to others once she gets employment.  

Chawane is the first person in her family to obtain a tertiary qualification, and she hopes her siblings can learn from her. She explains that her inspiration also came from marrying into an educated family. She credits her husband for the support he offered.

She says: "After being married, I had to match the standard of my husband’s family by adopting their educational culture. In this regard, my husband encouraged me to further my studies, register for a Higher Certificate in Archives and Records Management, and then register for a degree. I am grateful for his financial, emotional and educational support."

She encourages other students to stay focused, work hard and never give up. Chawane’s next pursuit is an honours degree in educational leadership and management.
