Theme: STEM-ERA aims to bring together educators and researchers in STEM education from around the world to share and discuss their teaching, learning and research.

The STEM-ERA conference will be held virtually in 2022, due to the prevailing uncertainly associated with Covid-19 pandemic. Despite the challenges posed by Covid-19 restrictions, the DeSTE is very dedicated to offer an exciting, innovative and enriching experience to virtual attendees and presenters.

STEM-ERA aims to bring together educators and researchers in STEM education from around the world to share and discuss their teaching, learning and research.

Call for Abstract

The University of South Africa (UNISA) – College of Education (CEDU): Department of Science and Technology Education (DeSTE) in collaboration with STEM Education and Research in Africa (STEM-ERA) cordially invites educators and researchers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education to participate in their inaugural STEM-ERA Conference.

Contributions should fit into one of the following strands within STEM education, please make sure that your paper reflects teaching, learning and research in STEM education

  • Students’ conceptions and conceptual change
  • Students’ interest and motivation
  • Students’ values, attitudes, and decision-making
  • Scientific thinking, nature of science and argumentation
  • Teaching strategies and teaching environments
  • Teaching and learning with educational technology
  • Environmental education
  • Health education
  • Social, cultural, and gender issues
  • Practical work and field work
  • Research methods and theoretical issues
  • Indigenous perspectives of STEM education

Conference format

The conference will be held on Microsoft Teams. Papers will be presented virtually.

Types of contributions

The Papers must be presented as an oral contribution. Manuscripts for an oral contribution should include the following:

Author information

  • Abstract (200 words maximum)
  • Keywords
  • A paper including title, preferred strand, theoretical background or rationale, key objectives, research design and methodology, findings conclusion and reference (5000 – 6000 words).

Conference format

Manuscripts will be reviewed under the following criteria:

  • Research: Is the proposal concerned with research in STEM education?
  • Subject / problem: What is the research problem or question?
  • What is the rationale for the study? What is the theoretical framework?
  • Design and methodology: What is the design of the study?
  • Are the research methods clearly described and appropriate?
  • Data analysis and findings: Are the data clearly presented? Is there consistency between data and findings?
  • General interest: papers addressing STEM education issues in Africa are encouraged.

Rules

  • No participant may submit more than three first authored papers. The first author is assumed to present the paper unless otherwise stated.
  • All presented papers will be published in the Conference Book.
  • Masters and doctoral students are encouraged to participate.
  • The conference language will be English.
