Academic Literacy Facilitator ascends the corporate ladder to become Senior Lecturer

Tebogo Innocentia Munyai's dream to work for Unisa full-time has become a reality. She acknowledges the support of professional staff and peers who motivated her to pursue further growth while serving as an Academic Literacy Facilitator in the North Eastern Region.

Munyai, originally from Thohoyandou in Limpopo, has recently been appointed as a Senior Lecturer at Unisa’s Department of Private Law. "One of my biggest achievements is to be part of the largest institution of higher learning in Africa. I have never thought I would go as far as serving Unisa," said Munyai.

Her colleagues’ warm welcome and encouragement at the College of Law have inspired her to contribute to the university’s academic projects. In 2015, after completing her LLB degree at the University of Venda, Munyani attended the School for Legal Practice in Polokwane. Her exceptional performance there led to her appointment as a graduate trainee for the Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services (FAIS) Ombudsman in Pretoria.

In 2016, she started her career as a Candidate Legal Practitioner at Vhutshilo Nange Attorneys in Thohoyandou. After successfully completing her articles in 2018, she was admitted as an attorney of the High Court. This achievement allowed her to establish her own law practice, Makamu & Munyai Inc.

Munyai’s ambition to expand her legal knowledge prompted her to take conveyancing and notarial exams, which resulted in her becoming a certified conveyancer and notary in 2019. Subsequently, she completed her Master’s degree in Property Law at the University of Venda.

"My love for imparting knowledge and giving back to society made me consider going into academia. I then joined the University of Venda in July 2020 to June 2023 as a part-time lecturer in the Department of Mercantile Law," said Munyai. She also enrolled for a Certificate in Corporate Finance, a Certificate in Due Diligence and a Certificate in Mergers and Acquisitions.

When asked how she became an employee at Unisa, the 30-year-old Munyai explained that she enrolled in an advanced course in Business Rescue at the university. Additionally, the university’s North Eastern Region appointed her as an Academic Literacy Facilitator.

"During my time as a facilitator at Unisa, I worked with highly qualified and professional people. This inspired me to want to grow more and to be part of the institution permanently. I am thrilled and grateful for this opportunity. I am looking forward to more growth, especially in academia," she concluded.
