Theme: Africa re-imagined through the lens of the law and criminal justice

The African continent is facing political, social and economic challenges. This has led to among others, high levels of unemployment, violent crimes, corruption, poverty, inequalities, lack of access to healthcare, evictions, landlessness, low levels of economic growth and sustainability, political instability and insecurity. The Covid-19 pandemic and the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) have further exacerbated some of these challenges.

In an attempt to provide context and possible solutions to these contemporary challenges, the Unisa College of Law will be hosting a conference themed Africa re-imagined through the lens of the law and criminal justice. The conference is geared towards bringing together academics, researchers, and visionaries from different disciplines of law and criminal justice from the African continent to reflect and to provide sustainable solutions to these challenges.

This conference will allow participants to unpack challenges aligned to their fields of expertise and encourage robust discussions from a multi-inter-trans and cross-disciplinary perspective. It is anticipated that the conference will encourage continuous engaged scholarship, research and possible reforms. This would include informed policy development which should lead to long lasting solutions to these identified challenges Africa is facing.

The three-day conference will feature plenary and interactive thematic sessions. Selected papers from the conference will be referred for publication in accredited journals.
