The rich history of the university exhibited at the Unisa Library

On 6 March 2023, the Unisa Library officially opened its physical and online exhibition in the library foyer at the Muckleneuk Campus. It will run throughout the month, and all stakeholders are invited to engage with it at the Muckleneuk library. The online exhibition can be viewed on Facebook @UnisaLibrary and Twitter @UnisaLibrary.

The exhibition captures the university's history as it celebrates 150 years and the birthday of the Unisa Library, established in 1946. In her opening address, Segametsi Molawa, Director: Information Resources Distribution, noted that the University of South Africa dates back to 1873 when the University of the Cape of Good Hope was established. The Unisa Library began in 1946, and its first new building was opened on 6 March 1959.

The building, renamed the Anton Lembede Building, was officially opened on 25 March 1987. Molawa expressed that March is a special month as the library community celebrates Library Week, Human Rights Day (21 March) and the library's birthday during the same month. On 21 March, the library will celebrate access to information, a basic human right. Another critical event on the calendar is Library Week hosted by the Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA) from 20 to 26 March 2023. Throughout the month, different activities will build up to a big event, which will take place on 24 March 2023.
