Focus areas

Research

UCofED is dedicated to conducting comprehensive research for positive change in the lives of persons with disabilities, families and the community. Our research informs inclusive policies at various levels, benefitting persons with disabilities, families, caregivers, and the community at large. UCofED continuously assess and adapt resources such as training materials, assessment tools and assistive devices to meet evolving needs. Actively sharing findings, we contribute to informed decision making among policy makers and the public.  

Intervention and Support

The center offers collaborative professional interventions and support to enhance the lives of individuals with disabilities. Aligned with Screening, Identification, Assessment and Support (SIAS) policy, it addresses needs for increased participation and inclusion in various environments. It collaborates with institutions and organizations to provide holistic support. Recognising the important role of families and professionals, UCofED offers guidance and assistance in adopting inclusive practices and improving programs.  The centre is committed to equipping caregivers and professionals with the skills needed for effective service delivery. 

Training

UCofED offers a comprehensive array of training activities targeting diverse stakeholders such as professionals, families, civil society, individuals with disabilities and industry partners.  Additionally, it offers field experience opportunities for students at UNISA and neighboring institutions, allowing them to apply knowledge and deepen their understanding of disability issues for future careers in the field. We provide hands-on training on the use of devices and resources available, ensuring that community members are comfortable and knowledgeable about functionalities of persons with disabilities.

Community engagement

UCofED drives impactful initiatives for persons with disabilities and their communities, incorporating community voices, collaborating closely with stakeholders, and tailoring strategies to specific needs.  UCofED is currently collecting a range of high-and low-tech devices for supporting the needs of persons with disabilities and caregivers. These devices can play a crucial role in enhancing accessibility, independence, and overall quality of life for persons with disabilities.
