Another Academic Female Champion

Ms. Nonkanyiso Pamella Shabalala - PhD candidate in the Department of Science and Technology, specialising in Environmental Education

Nonkanyiso Pamella Shabalala is a PhD student pursuing a Doctoral degree in Environmental Education in the Department of Science and Technology Education of the University of South Africa. Nonkanyiso was born in Mthwalume, a village in the South Coastal area of the KwaZulu Natal province, South Africa, on the 25th of December 1992. Nonkanyiso is a teacher by profession and teaches in same province where she was born. She holds a Masters degree in Environmental Education, Honours degree Education in Environmental Education (CUM-LAUDE) and a Bachelors degree in Intermediate and Senior Phase Education, all obtained from the University of South Africa.

Nonkanyiso entered the 9th Unisa Research and Innovation Student Showcase in 2021, where the theme was “Transformative research in the advent of global crises”. Among all the Doctoral students that entered, Nonkanyiso took first place for her prestigious research presentation and contribution. All the applicants from all the colleges at UNISA including CEDU, CAS, CEMS, CLAW and SBL were required to submit abstracts followed by presentations of their work.

According to Nonkanyiso, winning is not only about getting the prize, but it is more about her growth and recognition as a developing researcher. She believes that researchers can contribute knowledge to their local communities and the societies worldwide with an aim to assist in ways to solve global issues. Therefore, in winning the prize, for her she was more strengthened and given her more hope and motivation that the work she is doing is well communicated and understood by her audience. And her dream of achieving her PhD in Environmental Education is worth to be pursuit!
