The Unisa Biomechanics group is located at the Unisa Science Campus School of Engineering in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. It falls under the leadership of Professor Fulufhelo Nemavhola, with Dr Harry Ngwangwa as his deputy. The group has facilities equipped with various sophisticated and highly specialised equipment to investigate the behaviour of soft tissues under mechanical loadings. Specifically, the group has labs equipped with newly developed biaxial and cell-culture equipment. An understanding of the mechanics of soft tissues is vital in the development of computational models to study the mechanisms of diseases.
Academics and students engaged in the research process gain credible supervision from senior supervisors, access to biomedical lab facilities, and accreditation, as well as opportunities to publish their research output to biomedical journal sites and to present at local and international conferences.
As we see it, we are not just developing future engineers; we are creating the future leaders around biomechanics and biomedical engineering. Therefore, the biomechanical research team values the development of students, not just their academic achievement.
The state-of-the-art Unisa Biomechanics Lab is the best equipped Lab of its type in the whole of Africa. In this context, it is the only group with fully equipped lab in Africa selected to be part of the global project addressing the problem of the experimental characterising of biological tissues.
As an academic laboratory with a lot of young researchers, our participation in the initiative to host a symposium is to bring several advantages to our group.
