This program will focus mainly on (i) the isolation and characterization of plant-based organic compounds with potential nutritional, medicinal, toxicological, cosmetic and agrochemical applications, (ii) the design, syntheses and characterization of biologically relevant inorganic and organic compounds, and analogues of plant-based organic compounds and/ or medicinally important drugs in the market, and (iii) evaluation of the prepared or isolated compounds for biological activity against several human disorders linked to chronic inflammation, namely, cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and inflammation, as well as for antimicrobial and antimalarial properties. 2. Prof MJ Mphahlele
- The main thrust of my current research is directed towards the design and synthesis of biologically relevant heteroatom-containing organic compounds as potential multifunctional drugs against biochemical and biological targets associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM)
- Spectroscopic (NMR, IR, UV-Vis, Raman & HR-MS), single crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) and computational methods are applied to structural problems.
