The University of South Africa (Unisa) conferred the degree of Doctor of Philosophy on respected property mogul and pioneer of township and rural commercial and retail property development, Khazamula Michael (Mike) Nkuna at a graduation ceremony held at its Muckleneuk Campus on Friday, 18 October 2024.
The degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Business Management (Honoris Causa) was conferred on Mr Nkuna in recognition of his substantial contributions to the property development sector, which is demonstrable through his visionary leadership to elevate and invest in rural and township economic development. It is also in recognition of his transformative impact on the rural and township economies in South Africa and the vision to boost rural and township entrepreneurs by availing retail space and by bringing goods and services closer to rural and township residents.
He founded the Masingita Group of Companies in 1983, whose subsidiary entities are actively involved in property development, property management, asset management, construction management, facilities management, auctioneering services, manufacturing and mining in the last three decades. The group is currently developing two smart cities in the provinces of Limpopo and Gauteng.
Mr Nkuna has also established a trust, the Mike Nkuna Charitable Trust, for the benefit and welfare of rural communities and destitute people in rural and township areas, including providing food hampers to the destitute, orphaned and mostly child-headed families. He also, through the trust, recognises and honours schoolchildren who have performed exceptionally well in the fields of mathematics and science by way of giving them bursaries, trophies and certificates of excellence.
The graduation ceremony took place on Friday 18 October 2024 on the Unisa Muckleneuk Campus.
