Master's & doctoral degrees

What's new for 2025?

  • All master's and doctoral students must attend the compulsory African Academic Support Programme
  • If you obtained your qualifications outside the borders of South Africa, please take note of the following: (i) The qualification that will give you admission to your qualification of choice must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA); (ii) You may apply for admission without a SAQA certificate of evaluation; (iii) If you application for admission is accepted, you may register, but you will need to submit the SAQA certificate of evaluation before re-registering for the next academic year; and (iv) You can apply for the SAQA certificate of evaluation here: https://www.saqa.org.za
  • From 2023, the research proposal module will no longer be a stand-alone module for full research master's and doctoral qualifications. Students who are admitted will register for the dissertation/thesis in their first year of study.
  • Doctoral students who registered for the first time in 2022, and who will be completing in 2025, will be required to do an oral examination (viva voce) as part of the curriculum for the doctoral degree. Click here for the guidelines for the oral examination.
  • From 2024, doctoral students may at the time of registration discuss the option with their supervisor(s) to complete the doctoral degree by publication. The doctoral degree by publication refers to a doctoral degree that is composed of several peer-reviewed publications written as an introduction, discussion and conclusion that has been put together as separate chapters, contributing to a unified research theme within a specified field. Click here for more information on the PhD by Publication.
  • Students will now be able to track the progress of their master’s and doctoral application.
