Purpose: Of this module is to develop students' basic knowledge and skills of Chinese pronunciation, using common and simple Chinese expressions in everyday life, and writing Chinese characters. The student who completes this module will be able to produce Chinese pronunciation, perform basic functions in daily Chinese conversations, and write a limited number of simple Chinese characters.
Mandarin Chinese: Elementary Level - MAN1502

Purpose: Of this module is designed for those who complete the level of beginners (MAN1501), have mastered the Pinyin (Chinese Phonetic Alphabet) or have basic Chinese language skills to further develop their Chinese proficiency in terms of linguistic knowledge, linguistic skills, learning strategies and cultural awareness.1 The office of Chinese Language Council International, International curriculum for Chinese language education, pp. II-IV. The students at this level should reach the following specific purposes in terms of listening: understanding basic, familiar and well-pronounced words, as well as simple sentences concerning daily activities; speaking: repeating, retelling and reciting words and sentences in proper tones, as well as responding to simple greetings, instructions and commands; reading: recognising the Pinyin, simple characters and words, as well as numbers concerning daily activities; writing: writing basic characters with correct stroke order, as well as simple phrases and sentences in Pinyin; strategies: mastering basic learning strategies, communicative strategies, resources strategies and interdisciplinary strategies; and cultural awareness: gaining basic Chinese cultural knowledge and cross-cultural awareness in the global context.

Purpose: Of this module is designed for those who have passed Level 1 (MAN1501 and MAN1502) or have basic Chinese language skills to further develop their Chinese proficiency in terms of linguistic knowledge, linguistic skills, learning strategies and cultural awareness. Purpose: Of this module is for students to build on the Mandarin language structures, functions, and the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, which they have gained from the previous module - MAN2602, in order to further develop their communicative ability in Mandarin. The student who completes this module will be able to use Mandarin perform a wider range of functions, engage in deeper and longer conversations on a greater number of topics and situations, and make critical comparison between Chinese culture and their own cultures.

Purpose: Of this module is to further students' learning of the knowledge and skills of Mandarin in the previous module - MAN3703, and continue to develop the students' communicative ability in Mandarin. The student who completes this module will be able to understand language materials in more sectors of social life, produce more accurate sentences on familiar topics in description and explanation, and compose simple passages or connect basic passages. In addition, he/she will know introductory Chinese cultural and develop preliminary cross-cultural awareness and international perspectives.

Purpose: of this module is to further enhance students' communicative ability in Mandarin by continuing to build up their knowledge and skills in Mandarin that they have learned in the previous module - MAN3704. The student who completes this module will be able to understand a wide range of topics, produce correct sentences, write in paragraphs, create cohesive discourse, and express themselves fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. He/she will demonstrate extensive knowledge of Chinese cultural, as well as the development of preliminary cross-cultural awareness and international perspectives.
