Pietermaritzburg’s Royal Agricultural Show is the continent’s largest mixed exhibition incorporating a fully-fledged agricultural component – this annual ten-day event is well-known for including showings of livestock and agricultural equipment, but also for a wide range of other displays and activities, encompassing lifestyle exhibitions, music concerts and even a funfair.
Coinciding with the Royal Agricultural Society’s 172nd anniversary, the 2023 Royal Show opens its gates to the public from Friday, 26 May through Sunday, 4 June. Being the last Royal Show in its current form and at its current address, every effort is being made to ensure a grand and memorable occasion. Indicative of the interest shown by exhibitors with external and internal sites being booked to capacity.
In both instances, the mix of exhibits is varied, with a strong focus on ensuring quality displays.
The Royal is the premier agricultural show in the country and has doubled its efforts for 2023. This will see two National Livestock Championships being the Hampshire Down sheep breed, and for the first time, the Chianina cattle breed (an exceptionally large beef animal of Italian lineage).
Department of Agriculture and Animal Health was part of this event to educate the participants and to present the work of the university on programmes offered and the research initiatives of the department.
