Research focus and overview

An Advanced Joining and Materials Engineering Research Group is dedicated to the creation of inventive techniques and processes for the joining and manufacturing of materials intended for diverse industries. This research group aligns with two (marine studies and automotive) of the ten catalytic niche areas identified by UNISA's Vice-Chancellor. This research group combines expertise in materials science, mechanical engineering, metallurgy, and advanced manufacturing technologies to address challenges and explore opportunities in the field.

The group conducts fundamental and applied research to:

- Investigate novel joining methods such as welding, brazing, adhesive bonding, and additive manufacturing.

- Develop advanced materials with tailored properties for specific applications, including lightweight alloys, high-strength composites, and smart materials.

- Optimize manufacturing processes to enhance efficiency, productivity, and product quality while minimizing waste and environmental impact.

- Explore emerging technologies such as 3D printing, laser processing, and nanotechnology to push the boundaries of traditional manufacturing techniques.

- Collaborate with industry partners to translate research findings into practical solutions, improve manufacturing processes, and address industry needs and challenges.

- Educate and train the next generation of researchers, engineers, and technicians in advanced joining and manufacturing technologies through hands-on research experiences and academic programs.
