College of Accounting Sciences hosts successful student indaba in Zimbabwe

The College of Accounting Sciences (CAS), through its School of Applied Accountancy, recently held a highly successful student engagement session with Zimbabwean students in collaboration with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Zimbabwe (ICAZ). This event, known as the Zim-CAS Student Indaba, is a key initiative aimed at strengthening Unisa's relationship with ICAZ and providing essential support to Zimbabwe-based students.

Although not present at the Zim-CAS Student Indaba, CAS Executive Dean, Dr Moses Hlongoane, emphasised the significance of student support, saying: "2024 is the year we dedicate to student support, and the college must seize every opportunity to engage with its students to understand the type of support they need to succeed in their learning journey."

Mary Pholo, Director of the School of Applied Accountancy, echoed these sentiments. "The Zim-CAS Student Indaba speaks directly to student support. During our recent visit to ICAZ, we focused on strengthening Unisa's relationship with ICAZ by supporting Zimbabwe-based students and fostering strong relations with training officers," she said.

Pholo further emphasised that student success is a priority for the college. "We want to see you succeed; your success is important to us. That's why we made time to visit you and engage. There are also free classes available, and we encourage you to attend them so you can pass your exams."

The student engagement highlighted the need for enhanced academic and registration support, particularly for Zimbabwean students, which underscores the importance of Unisa's presence during critical phases of students' education. "The initiative aligns with Unisa's broader internationalisation strategy, reinforcing its mission to be the African university shaping futures in the service of humanity," said Pholo.

The visit, which also focused on increasing student enrolment, provided valuable insights into the needs of both current and prospective students. Many attendees were potential Unisa students, and the engagement was strategically aligned with the 2025 application process, ensuring students were well-prepared to apply for the upcoming academic year.

Dr Jaco Moolman, Chair of the Department of Financial Intelligence, played a critical role in addressing the students on topics such as hybrid exams, proctoring and the IRIS system, which are integral to their academic experience. He also provided a detailed orientation to help students navigate their educational journey with confidence.

As CAS continues to engage with students across borders, this successful session in Zimbabwe sets a strong foundation for ongoing collaboration and support, ensuring that Zimbabwe-based students receive the academic and institutional assistance they need to excel in their studies.
