From 5 to 8 November 2024, the Durban University of Technology, in partnership with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, hosted the 9th International Conference on Governance and Accountability, themed Innovative Governance for Sustainable Futures. This prestigious conference was attended by esteemed scholars and delegates from Nigeria, Japan, Malaysia, the United Kingdom, Ghana and Zimbabwe, among others.
For the first time in the history of the conference, a Colloquium for Emerging Scholars was held on 5 November for both master’s and PhD students across the globe. At this event, Mashamaite Ramutsheli, Director: Institutional Information (POPIA Office) within the Registrar’s Portfolio, was recognised in the Best Emerging Scholar category.
Ramutsheli’s award-winning research paper from her PhD study, titled Optimising Continuous Auding in South African Public Sector: Evaluating the Role of National Treasury, was voted the best paper among all the PhD emerging scholars.
"Receiving this award felt like a dream come true," says Ramutsheli. "Furthermore," she adds, "I am highly appreciative of my supervisor, Dr Sedzani Musundwa, who constantly motivates me to ensure that I succeed in my PhD studies. This award encouraged me to really move towards the completion of my study and refuse any form of distraction and challenges which may come my way. Big up to Dr Musundwa! This award is the product of her leadership."
Ramutsheli’s recognition as Best Emerging Scholar is a testament to her exceptional contribution towards the field of governance and accountability.
